Tung-Sol KT120

Product Description

Tung-Sol KT120 - Super cool KT88 variant made by New Sensor in Russia. This tube is a drop-in replacement for KT88s... no special re-wiring required! The KT120 is rated to have a plate dissipation of 60W... compared with the 35W of the 6550, the 42W of the KT88, that's a lot of juice!

The KT120 also draws more filament current from your amp's output transformer(s).  Before you buy them, check with your amp's manufacturer to make sure you've got enough headroom.

One quick note: The KT120 is about 1/2" taller than a typical KT88, so if your KT88s are already a tight squeeze in your equipment, you may want to measure to make sure you have enough clearance before placing an order.

Pricing above includes matching in any quantity you need at no extra charge.

All power tubes are Platinum Screened & Tested to the highest standards, including a 72-hour burn in process, and testing at real-world voltages.

Every power tube is different. This applies especially to power tubes like EL34, 6550, KT88’s, etc. Two tubes can be brand new in the original box, with one testing at [as an example] 6500 micromhos, the next one at 8600 micromhos. Both tubes would be considered "new" by the factory, and not defective. While the weaker tube isn’t "defective," it will certainly have a shorter life. So if you pay 10% less, you might get a tube with a significantly shorter life. The big lie from manufacturers of tube equipment and tube dealers themselves is that they “reject” these tubes. It’s not true. You can imagine the nightmare that would create for the tube factory if people are sending back 50% - 80% of the tubes that get shipped, coming back in all kinds of condition.

As the owner of Upscale Audio, a company that has supplied tubes into over 50,000 components, and someone obsessed with treating your amp like it’s my amp, I can tell you in no uncertain terms the factory doesn’t take them back. The only tubes they will take back are tubes that have shorts, gas, or measure BELOW the minimum number they assign for that tube type (it varies from type to type, so don’t bother trying to figure that out).

I’ve overcome that issue for you. I can say with calm assurance that we pay the factories more for our tubes than any other tube seller, and we ensure that we receive the absolute cream of the crop. This flies against the logic of how to run a business: The way you make money is to pay less for the goods you sell! That’s what most ANY business owner will tell you. We also don’t sell certain brands of tubes because while they might be cheap and sometimes good, they can be more trouble than they're worth. We pass on a lot of money as a result.

Upscale Audio is the only dealer that does what we do on a grand scale, and have a deep understanding of high end tube electronics. We’re the only dealer that manufacturers give a thumbs-up to, and recommend to their customers. And I promise you only the best.

  1. Cary CAD120s heven!

    Posted by Jake.S on 18th Sep 2015

I had recently purchased the KT-120 tubes as a replacement for my stock Electro Harmonix kt-88 in my Cary CAD 120s amp. And was very sceptical about it since everyone in every audio chatroom praises them. So since living in Canada I took the deep plunge into my pockets and the crumbling dollar and bought them. All I can say is wow what a huge difference. I have very inefficient speaker the totem forest 87DB and a cary slp-98p with phono, which I noticed newer vinyl recordings of newer artists and some reissue in triode mode. It was harder to drive my speakers in my 1100 square living foot room, and was always cranking the volume knob to almost max. Once I plugged in the kt-120 it boost up the dynamics big time and the bass just growls and goes lower then ever before, and I mostly only crank the volume now to 1/4 of the way up. They solved the issue of the new recordings and stop the screeching I get with some female artist's on CD's. And playing Ariana Grande's Break Your Heart Right Back at a party's people jaws drop and ask what were is the subwoofer. Which i found that the kt-88 did not much depth(clarity) and low end. But the best thing is all of this happens in triode mode and never need to switch to ultra liner mode ever again.
So If you have a tube amp and need a little more dynamics from your speaker don't buy new speakers try the kt-120s there awesome for the price. Plus Upscale audio has the best service and prices anywhere. My local dealer wanted $90 each Canadian plus matching for each set of 2 tubes. Which 8 tubes adds up very quick. Which upscale dose this for free, and even burns them in for you which once you receive them there is no big change in sound once they are burned in.

Thanks Kevin! I will defiantly be coming back for my second set of these from upscale!

  2. Works well in my Quicksilver V4's

Posted by John on 20th Jul 2015

I replaced the original stock JJ KT88 in my Quicksilver V4's with 8 of these KT120's. The V4's are from 2009 and I confirmed with Mike S. that there would be no problem using the KT120 tube. I will not go into a slew of superlatives because I think differences in tubes are subtle but I do find the KT120's to be solid in the bottom octaves and clear throughout the rest of the frequency range. A very nice looking tube and robustly built. A pleasure dealing with Upscale and I will be back.

  3. Upscale delivers on promise

Posted by John Harris on 1st May 2015

Purchased four matched pair of KT120 for my Audio Research VS-115 amp. The biasing was a snap and the "matched pairs" actually match unlike others that I've bought from dealers promising matched pairs. Upscal delivers as promised. Highly recommended.

  4. KT 120 vs 6550

Posted by Luigi on 11th Mar 2015

With this tube I have got all what I was looking for: more dynamic, more extention in low and high frequences better spatial localization and a great musicality .Very Happy You must try it

  5. awesome tube!!

Replaced sovtek KT88's with these tubes,no comparison , better in every way in my opinion

  6. 120 tube review

Posted by Unknown on 30th Jan 2015

Had only in dialog 2 for 2 weeks. First thing I noticed was the low end punch it did not have with the stock Primaluna Kt88 tubes. My speakers are Maggie 1.7s and the Sound Field around them is larger with these new tubes

  7. Replaced EL34s with KT120s in Dialogue II

Posted by Collin J on 6th Jan 2015

The EL34s were really sweet sounding in the Dialogue II, especially for female vocals and strings. I try to listen in triode mode most of the time to smooth things out. However, with recordings that have a higher dynamics range, I find myself switching over to ultra linear mode for more punch, at the cost of some headache inducing brightness. The KT120s solves that problem because I can pretty much leave it in triode mode 90% of the time. I'm only 50 hours or so into break in, and it's opening up quite nicely like a glass of great Cabernet.

  8. Sounded like a new rig!!!

Posted by Steve R on 27th Dec 2014

I put a quartet of these cyro-treated tubes into my PrimaLuna Prologue 2 to replace a several-year-old set of Primaluna issued KT88s. I could not believe the improvement. There was a richer overall sound spectrum with a bigger but not overbearing bottom, richer mids, and more transparent highs. I played a range of well-recorded CDs through a Musical Fidelity DAC and wow. It made my speakers, Opera 5s, just fill the room with a larger and more engaging sound stage. I even rolled back my REL sub a bit. We're not talking about spending 1000s here on a new power amp, but $250! Most of the additions and tweaks to my rig make modest improvements. I'd say that these tubes and the modded DAC prompted the biggest jumps of all the gear. They really surpassed my expectations--and GUYS--even my girlfriend noticed it and liked it!

  9. PrimaLuna Dialogue One integrated

Posted by Scott W on 10th Nov 2014

Plopped these in and, oh, it's quite the scene man. If you too own a PL product, what are you waiting for?

  10. More QUALITY juice from my PrimaLuna 3&5 Prologue combi.

    Posted by Rens51 on 27th Mar 2014

I wrote a review also for the Philips 5R4GYS Made in Holland rectifier tubes that I replaced at the same time. These KT120 bring me more power and authority over my PL KT-88's, to my low sensitivity ProAc Response 2,5S speakers. The KT-88's were also about end-of-life. Have now ±100 hours playtime on the set, and overall a noticeable quality step-up!! The jury is still out how / if this will further improve, so 4 stars. For more experience see my write-up with the Philips 5R4GYS's. Reason to buy from Upscale audio (and import to Holland at a cost) was their testing and cryogenic treatment option. Very happy also with the customer services and related communications thru the site. Thanks to Kevin and Team!!
