These improvements take sound performance far in advance of the already superior level achieved by the Apollo.
Most CD players just play your CD. You don't really expect anything additional. But the revolutionary Saturn CD player from Rega analyzes your disc before it plays it. Like the engine management system on a modern car, which optimizes the engine settings to ambient temperature, engine temperature, fuel quality, and other conditions, the Saturn will adjust itself to your CD in order to give optimal trouble-free reading and great sound quality. This process takes a few short seconds and the resultant musical improvements are well worth the wait.
Sam Tellig explains this feature in his Stereophile magazine review of Saturn's little brother, the Apollo. "Each time the user loads a new disc, the Apollo reads the whole of the CD's subcode data into memory, analyzes it and then selects the most appropriate of four levels of error correction. That way, the music is never overcorrected per se, and the integrity of the original datastream is kept intact to the greatest extent possible.
Just like the Apollo, the Saturn uses a new high quality transport mechanism, which incorporates a three-point mounting ball chuck. This has advantages over the magnetic puck type design. First, it presents the disc as flat as is possible to the laser, resulting in improved reading of the information on the disc. Secondly, because the motor has less mass to spin, the mechanism itself is under less stress and demonstrates better acceleration and braking performance.
